Saying "No" and Holding back

We finally had a good weekend! It was so fun. On Friday night we had dinner with my parents. On Saturday we spent some time with my sisters – in downtown and uptown, walking around and eating out fun places. On Sunday, my Dad watched Kaylee so Eric and I could go to a movie and out for coffee. It was very enjoyable and I needed it!
During the weekend, Kaylee learned how to say “no.” We even heard her get better at it as she goes. At first she was saying “Nah-Nah” but then learned how to say “No-no.” I say “no-no” to her because I don’t want her near wall outlets or the dog dishes. She stops what shes doing and recites “no-no…no-no….no-no” as she crawls away. Thankfully it hasn’t come through as some sort of obstenant communication (yet). She’s been saying it a lot and it seems like she’s just practicing the word, not that she’s saying “No” to everything. But I would like to teach her “Yes” too soon, because that could get us very far with her if she can start to tell us “yes” and “no” to our simple questions. Her voice is so cute, it is the cutest, softest, sweetest “No” you’ve ever heard. It helps that she doesn’t have any sort of negative tone that goes with the “No.”
Kaylee has gotten to be a little shy around people now when she’s not sure of a situation – it’s where she’s at developmentally with learning how to trust. She takes a while when we take her somewhere to play to go out with the group – she sits and takes it all in first making sure she understands her surroundings first. Also when she’s with someone she doesn’t know as well she will be a bit clingy wanting to be held all the time, or hiding behind us. When asked to say “hi” or wave she will be very tentative about it and wait until she’s ready to do it. Smiling doesn’t come as fast to her, even when funny faces are made at her in those situations. We’re happy that this hasn’t surfaced with a lot of tears and crying, it’s more of a holding back.
